Irish community in Britain welcomes NI vote for devolution

Welcoming today's [9 March 2010] historic vote in the Northern Ireland Assembly to devolve policing and judicial powers to the NI Executive, Jennie McShannon, Chief Executive of the Federation of Irish Societies, said:
"Today's historic vote will be warmly welcomed across the Irish community in Britain.
"The devolution of policing and judicial powers sees the historic Good Friday Agreement delivered in full and a real chance now emerges for cross-community co-operation in Northern Ireland for the first time ever.
"All political leaders who have taken leaps of faith over the last 12 years to make this day happen deserve our thanks. But the thousands of unsung heroes, many from Irish communities here in Britain, have also played a role in securing devolution, democracy and dialogue.
"The Irish community in Britain will continue to spur on Northern Ireland's local political leaders, as well as the British and Irish governments, in order to realise the ambitions of the Good Friday Agreement and secure a new future for all peoples on these islands.
"Today is a great day for politics, peace and progress in Northern Ireland."
