The Tesco Charity Trust was set up on 1 June 1987 to support both national and local community charity appeals. It is run by a board of trustees recommended by the main board of Tesco PLC. In 2006, the Tesco Charity Trust made cash grants of £1,496,373 to local and national charities in the UK. The Charity Trust Community Award Scheme awarded grants totalling £399,000 to local projects. These provide practical benefits in the local community for three vulnerable groups: children, the elderly and those with disabilities. The Trust also adds 20% to all approved fundraising by Tesco staff in respect of charities or the community.
