PRESS RELEASE
Luton Irish Forum (LIF) is delighted to announce the second event in its health promotion programme: 'Healthy Heart Day'
Following the success of our first 50+ Health MOT Day last year, LIF is holding second day focusing on conditions relating to the heart and circulatory system.
The Irish community suffers from among the highest rates of cardiovascular disease in men and women from different minority ethnic groups. Between 1989-1992 coronary heart disease (CHD) standardised mortality ratios for people aged 20-44 years were 49% higher for Irish males and 20% higher for Irish females. Among Irish people aged 45-59 years, CHD deaths showed an excess of 32% for Irish males and 41% for Irish females.
The event is being funded by Dion [Irish Government support], and is supported by Luton PCT, Luton and Dunstable Hospital, Federation of Irish Societies, Active Luton and the National Stroke Association. The day will be opened at 11.30am by Luton Irish Forum's President, Margaret Moran MP. Dr Kumar Cardiologist at Luton & Dunstable Hospital will provide an overview on Ischaemic heart disease, together with a number of themed presentations and information stalls. Luton PCT will be providing free health checks from 12 noon until 3pm including cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar and an opportunity to find out how much Carbon Monoxide there is in your breathe.
