London Irish Centre (LIC): What's On and News January 2010
It's a New Year, and we've got lots of great new projects and services, as well as the return of the best of 2009. The weather outside is frightful... but don't let that stop you.
- Hugely popular Irish songwriter Declan O'Rourke, recently described by Paul Weller as "...a major new talent..." plays our Rock Shandy Club Night on Feb 5. Tickets @ http://irishcentre.org/?page_id=135.
- We have some places remaining on our new Irish language courses starting the week after next. Details on http://irishcentre.org/?page_id=76. London Irish Centre students now get 15% off @ http://www.cuplafocal.ie, a leading online bookstore. If you want to learn fiddle, banjo or any other traditional instrument, we also run classes.
- Our welfare services are back in full swing, providing advice and outreach services to members of our community.
- We will launch a new event called 'Give us a Song!' on Jan 21st. The idea is simple, come along with your songs, stories, and party pieces of any kind, and join us for a FREE night of uniquely Irish craic.
- We welcome Stephanie Milne, our new Volunteer Organiser. Drop her an email on volunteerorganiser@irishcentre.org if you want to get involved. Speaking of which, if you're free every second Wed 1-4pm, and fancy helping out at a fun social event, let us know.
- Return to Camden Town present the legendary John & James Carty, with John Blake on Jan 29th. See www.returntocamden.org for details and booking.
- London Irish Theatre is back with a new course in writing for the stage entitled 'From Page to Stage, and a series of rehearsed readings. See www.londonirishtheatre.com for details.
- On Feb 1 we will launch 'Silver Screenings', a new afternoon film club, showing the best films from Ireland's past and present. We open with 'The Irishmen' (about the Irish in 1950s' Camden Town) and a selection of short films on traditional Irish crafts from the 'Hands' series. All are welcome for a 2.30pm start.
Finally, don't miss two great Irish plays - 'Great Garbo Came to Donegal' @ The Tricycle (http://alturl.com/7cxz), and Behan's 'The Hostage' @ Southwark Playhouse (http://alturl.com/d5xi).
