A full time Ph.D. Studentship is available (for EU nationals only) from October 2008 at CRESR.
CRESR is one of the leading policy-orientated research centres in the UK, undertaking major research projects for government departments and research charities. Particular areas of expertise include regeneration and neighbourhood renewal, housing and labour markets. Successful applicants will be located alongside existing higher degree students within this thriving research environment.
The studentship is funded by the Faculty of Development and Society at Sheffield Hallam University. It is for three years, subject to satisfactory progress, and covers fees together with a bursary of £12,940 per annum. The bursary holder will be expected to contribute to the resourcing of the student experience during their second and third years of study, either through seminar teaching or some other form of student support. The start date for the studentships is 1 October 2008. Students already registered for a Ph.D. may apply provided they have been registered for no more than 12 months.
Applicants should have a good honours degree and ideally a postgraduate qualification in a relevant subject area. Those with professional expertise in planning, regeneration, community development, community safety or housing (or a related professional area) are also welcome. While applicants can submit a proposal in an area of their choosing, applications are particularly welcome in the following areas:
- The experience of Irish populations in English cities
- Perception and realities of no-go areas in urban areas of England
- Investment-led demand and housing market change
- Oil depletion, transition towns and multi-level policy development
- New arrangements for community governance
- A comparative study of area based regeneration programmes in Europe
- Skills and professionalism in neighbourhood regeneration
- Think tanks, policy transfer and regional development
- Tensions between city-living and nightlife
