Tesco Charity Trust Community Awards Scheme: Children, Elderly, Disabled - February 2009


Summary: The Tesco Charity Trust Community Awards Scheme provides one-off donations of between £1,000 and £4,000. The funding goes towards providing practical benefits, such as equipment and resources for projects that directly benefit children, the elderly and disabled people (both adults and children), living in the local communities around Tesco stores in the UK.

Funding themes (areas of interest): There are two categories of Community Awards:

  • Grants to support children's welfare and/or children's education (including special needs schools)

  • Grants to support elderly people and/or disabled people (children and adults)

Projects they have previously supported include:

  • Playground equipment in schools and local communities

  • Sensory garden or room projects

  • Outdoor classrooms

  • Breakfast and after school clubs

  • Holiday play-schemes

  • Part funding to purchase minibuses

  • Befriending schemes

  • Luncheon clubs / youth clubs

  • Specialist equipment for disabled people

  • Day trips / social trips - for elderly / disabled people.

Grant size available: One-off donations of between £1,000 and £4,000.

Types of cost funded: Revenue and capital costs.

Types of organisation that can be funded: Not-for-profit organisations (you do not have to be a registered charity).

Geographical areas that can be funded: UK, in areas near to Tesco stores (so that's everywhere, then)

How to apply: Applications should be made online via this website

Deadline: For the children's welfare and/or children's education category, you should submit applications between 1 December and 31 January, or between 1 May and 30 June each year. For the elderly and/or disabled category, you should apply between 1 February and 31 March, or between 1 August and 30 September each year.

Key exclusions (what can't be funded):

  • Salaries

  • Fundraising events or challenges

  • Conferences of seminars

  • Grants to individuals, including students

  • Activities which collect funds for redistribution to other charities or individuals

  • Purchase of land or buildings

  • Refurbishment to fabric of buildings, including lift installations

  • Overseas appeals

  • Expeditions or overseas travel

  • Promotion of religion

  • Sponsorship and marketing promotions

  • Endowment funds.
