Improving mental health services for Black and Minority Ethnic Communities in England – the community response and its evaluation
by Patricia Walls
This is a report and evaluation of an Irish community consultation on Inside
Outside: Improving mental health services for Black and Minority Ethnic
Communities in England (NIMHE, 2003), carried out on behalf of the NIMHE by the
Federation of Irish Societies. Part One presents an analysis of the views and
concerns expressed during this process on the Inside Outside report and on
issues of Irish mental health and mental health service provision for Irish
people in England. The analysis presents comparative data derived from
questionnaires administered at all the ethnic minority events and draws as well
on general discussions and views from workshops at the Irish community events.
Part Two evaluates the consultation process and, in so doing, outlines some
problems encountered during the consultation which have relevance for Irish
sector development with regard to dealing with Irish mental health. This
publication also contains, as appendices, a number of papers prepared by the
author for the NIMHE to provide information on the profile of the Irish
community in Britain, along with evidence of Irish mental health inequalities
and briefings on Irish community development and issues of cultural sensitivity.
