This paper originated as a submission to the King's Fund Commission on the
Health and Care of Older People in London. Compared to other minority ethnic
groups a high proportion of Irish people in London are aged 60 and over. The
older Irish population have specific health problems and social and cultural
needs which are not recognised or adequately addressed by providers. The paper
draws together statistical data and information from a variety of sources to
provide a profile of the older Irish population, and convincingly argues the
need for cultural sensitivity in the provision of services to this section of
the Irish community. It draws on the profile provided to identify and discuss a
wide range of issues around the service needs of elderly Irish people, both in
areas of high and low density Irish settlement. Summaries of key issues and
recommendations are provided.
